Feature Request – Automatic Heel Volume Calculation for Linear Measurements

Under Review

Hi Team,

I would like to suggest an enhancement to the Linear measurement functionality for retaining walls and similar footing systems.

Currently, when measuring a retaining wall footing using the "Linear with Width & Depth" option, the Toe portion can be calculated correctly. However, where the footing includes a heel, users must manually create formulas such as:

([Linear] × [Heel Width] × [Heel Depth])

to calculate excavation quantities, concrete volumes, backfill volumes and other quantities associated with the heel section.

Would it be possible to introduce additional Linear variables such as:

  • [Heel Width]
  • [Heel Depth]

and have zzTakeoff automatically calculate the associated heel volume in the same way that it currently derives other quantities from Linear measurements?

This would be particularly useful for retaining walls such as RW1 shown on the attached detail, where the heel dimensions vary depending on the wall height. The enhancement would reduce manual formula creation, improve consistency between estimates, minimise user error, and simplify quantity take-offs for excavation, concrete, backfill and related items.

Ideally, users could simply enter the heel dimensions and reference a calculated value such as: [Heel Volume³]

I believe this would be a valuable addition for civil, structural and retaining wall estimating workflows, particularly where heel dimensions change throughout a project.

Thanks for considering this enhancement.

I would add to this by saying in addition to the heal function, it would be great if a custom profile could be traced, and let that be the cross section area that is use to calculate the volume.

Thanks for the feature request Steve! In the meantime, you should be able to set up 2 custom properties for "Heel Width" and "Heel Depth" that apply to linears. You should also be able to set up a custom property type 'computed' that calculates the "Heel Volume³" applied to linears.

Further, create a feature whereby you perform basic takeoffs on a detail to create the required takeoff assembly for the plan pages. Maybe use AI to grab the schedule and make it part of the assembly/item calculations.
