Right clicking/middle clicking interrupts linear tool when you are trying to draw a single segment

Completed

When I am trying to draw a single line by holding down the left mouse, if I need to scroll/pan with right mouse button or middle mouse button while drawing, the linear tool stops and closes the point as soon as I press another mouse button, even though I still have the left mouse button held down. Not sure if this is a bug or on purpose.

This is why I still use the segment tool for single lines like this, as the drawing does not get interrupted.

Thanks for reporting. This issue is now fixed in our development version, and will be released along with our next update. As a side note, long term we plan to merge Linear and Segment tools into one and have it just be 2 modes of the same tool.

Heber,

Interesting that you will be rolling the linear and segment tools into one. I had thought about that—even rolling all the tools into one. The idea was that you are basically doing the same thing with each tool, i.e. drawing points. Reminds me of ordered, weighted graphs of sorts with the primary differences between each type being whether or not the edges are “continuous” and whether or not a graph is “closed.”

The idea, I suppose, was that all takeoffs could operate the same way. Start drawing points with hotkey R for “record” and add a “discontinuity” (basically the same as a new section) with hotkey Spacebar. Change types before, during, or after takeoff with another hotkey, so there would be no need for takeoff items to be initiated from a ribbon or menu. Toggle the takeoff closed with yet another hotkey.

I currently use R and Spacebar in this fashion, but your comment about combining linear and segment tools reminds me that if you were to use the above thinking (that the “discontinuity” between consecutive segments or lines is also a segment) then you could perform two takeoffs in one. An example of the use of this idea would perhaps be a wall with openings. Wherever there is a “discontinuity” or a break in consecutive segments we could add a header for an opening.

Does that make sense?

Yeah, I like the general idea. Super fast to do takeoffs and toggle between different takeoff types (or templates once we add that). We're leaning toward Space hotkey for this (we could easily add a way in the right click menu as well), and it could popup right by your mouse. We could have the popup show a search + recent things you've taken off, or easily start a new one. We've had some discussion about this regarding wall heights for example, as you're clicking the wall templates could be "related" somehow so they are easy to toggle between 8', 10', etc. and it stores the totals for each in their own takeoff item. Same concept applies for windows. I see what you're saying, it could be possible to easily switch between types as well. Thanks for all the input.

Hey Jes, just wanted to let you know that this bug has been fixed in the latest release for the linear tool, and any other tools that use click & drag functionality (arrow annotation, notes, highlighter, etc.).
