Re-Assign Objects

Completed

Is there anyway to re-assign objects? For example I have a bunch of F13 spot footings, but need to switch them to F12. The only way I have found is you have to re-draw.

We will for sure be adding this. We will also add the ability to change the takeoff type (from area to linear, etc.).

When we have templates, we will also need a way to switch from one template type to another.

Thinking of button terminology:

Convert to... (or maybe Re-assign) - this could convert a takeoff section from one takeoff item (F13) to another takeoff item (F12).

Change Type - change from area to linear, etc.

The convert or re-assign would need the ability to choose from your saved templates as well as takeoff items on your current project.

This could also be handled via Copy & Paste -> Create New Item functionality (which I am eagerly waiting for)

In this same scenario/example, I have a Metal Roof. One section is 3:12 Pitch. I used the Naming option to quickly set scale, name the page and name the "condition" (What is ZZT's naming for a takeoff item?). Next I took off another area and realize it is 4:12. I understand we will have the option to reassign. Will I be able to copy the condition, then paste and rename, and then reassign? Currently the copy option on the condition is for the takeoff itself and not the condition.

Hi Mark. We call them "takeoff items" (on the right). We're planning to call a specific area or linear on the page a "takeoff measurement" (sometimes "section" depending on the context). This right click menu is getting merged with the "..." menu as we speak, so that will be improved. There has been some terminology overlap (even from myself) but we're working to solidify & clarify the terminology. The word "takeoff" has so many meanings in different contexts that it's sometimes difficult to find words to call a "thing".

We could fix so that the copy/paste on the takeoff item will properly paste a new takeoff item (right sidebar). Quick question: if the "takeoff item" had measurements on many pages, and you copy & paste the takeoff item (in right sidebar), would you expect it pastes all the measurements on those pages as well? Maybe we prompt the user to see if they want a copy of the takeoff item with or without the measurements.

We are working on a "Convert to..." option in the right click menu, either on the "takeoff item" from the sidebar or the "takeoff measurement" on the page. Our thinking is this will show a popup with multiple purposes:

  1. Change the takeoff type: for example from area to linear
  2. Re-assign / change the takeoff item that a selected takeoff measurements are part of
  3. Ability to move selected takeoff measurements into new takeoff items (kind of like "Paste as New", but can be done after paste or any time later)
  4. Apply a template to the selected takeoff item

This is at least our current line of thinking. We're open to input.

Hi Heber!

I really like to optional approach allowing the estimator freedom to make their choice without disruption top their workflow.

And thank you for the clarification on the terminology. After working with several others for so many years, it does get a bit fuzzy.

Is the re-assign takeoff an active feature?

Heber Allred zzTakeoff23d 14h

@Leah If you right click on a takeoff section, you can "Convert To..." to change it to a different type of takeoff.

I see this for an individual takeoff, what if I need to reassign multiple takeoffs?

You can multi select takeoff sections on the page, and if you right click you should be able to convert multiple at once:
